The new preparation of the requisite o-dienylbenzoate uses o-bromo benzaldehyde, which undergoes the Wittig reaction in high yield. Exchange of the bromine with an organolithium is followed by quenching with ethyl chloroacetate to give the ester, or with carbon dioxide to give the acid (in about 55% yield)
